François Mitterrand, President of the French Republic (1st term 1981-1988)

Presidential election of April 26 and May 10, 1981

The second round organized on May 10, 1981 sounds like the revenge of 1974. Between the two rounds, the left managed to unite around a common program, while the right was undermined by divisions and the rivalry between Giscard and Chirac .

François Mitterrand wins with more than a million votes in advance. It is "alternation", the first time that the right has to leave the Elysee Palace since the creation of the Fifth Republic.

On May 10, François Mitterrand was elected President of the Republic in the 2nd round with 51.76% against Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.
