USSR: a series of postage stamps for the benefit of victims of the earthquake in Armenia

A violent earthquake devastated Armenia (Soviet Union) on December 7, 1988. The tremor, with a magnitude close to 7 on the Richter scale, completely destroyed Spitak, a town of 50,000 inhabitants, and seriously damaged Leninakan, Kirovakan and Stepanavan. The toll shows 25,000 victims and there are five hundred thousand homeless, while snow falls on the region and the temperature continues to drop. For the first time in the USSR, news of the disaster was spread immediately and Western aid was eagerly accepted by Mikhail Gorbachev.

On December 27, 1988, the Soviet Post Office issued a series of three mourning stamps for the victims of the earthquake. A special series of 100 First Day envelopes numbered “Moscow-Strasbourg, Council of Europe” was produced on this occasion.
