The Ukrainian people to receive the 2022 Sakharov Prize
The brave Ukrainian people will be awarded the European Parliament’s 2022 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in a ceremony on Wednesday 14th December at noon.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to address the plenary chamber remotely, with other representatives of the Ukrainian people gathered physically in Strasbourg.
President Roberta Metsola and several of the Ukrainian representatives will hold a press conference after the award ceremony.
The "Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought", named in honour of Soviet physicist and political dissident Andrei Sakharov, is awarded each year by the European Parliament. It was established in 1988 to honour individuals and organisations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms.
