Mission ALPHA - ESA 2021 - French astronaut Thomas Pesquet en route for the ISS with SpaceX Crew-2

In July 2020, ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet was officially assigned to the second operational flight of SpaceX's Crew Dragon (Crew-2) space vehicle.

Thomas Pesquet (France), Megan McArthur (USA), Shane Kimbrough (USA) and Akihiko Hoshide (Japan) took off on April 23, 2021 aboard SpaceX Crew-2 bound for the International Space Station (ISS) from Cape Canaveral in Florida. With the Crew Dragon Endeavor ship, they arrived in approaching the ISS after approximately 23.5 flight hours. The ship docked with the American module Harmony from the ISS on Saturday April 24 at 11:10 a.m. (French time).

As part of the ALPHA Mission (ESA), Thomas Pesquet is responsible for carrying out technical maintenance operations on the ISS, as well as 232 scientific experiments in the research laboratory in orbit without terrestrial attraction. He will be the first Frenchman to command the ISS for a month.

On November 9, 2021, after 199 days in space, Thomas Pesquet and the rest of the Crew-2 crew successfully landed off the coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico aboard Crew Dragon Endeavour.

A special edition of 5 astrophilatelic envelopes, limited to 50 numbered copies, was carried out from Cape Canaveral (Florida) and Houston (Texas) to commemorate Mission Alpha aboard the ISS.
