France paid a huge tribute to Johnny Hallyday, monument to French song. Saturday, December 9, hundreds of thousands of people came to say goodbye to "the idol of the young", who died on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, December 6. A historic rally took place, accompanied by a religious ceremony in the church of the Madeleine after the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, spoke. The Paris police headquarters did not communicate official figures but according to some sources say more than 500,000 people participated in the tribute.
The funeral procession, which left Place de l'Etoile to descend the Champs-Elysées, was accompanied by 700 bikers. Dozens of music and film stars gathered at the Madeleine Church. The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy also attended. On the forecourt, Johnny Hallyday's musicians played his songs. The audience cried and sang. The singer will be buried on Monday on the island of Saint-Barthélemy.
A philatelic envelope in homage to Johnny Hallyday
To respond to the many requests from our philatelist friends, affected by the disappearance of Johnny Hallyday, we decided to make a philatelic envelope commemorating the immense popular tribute that France reserved for the singer on this Saturday, December 9, 2017. For that, we we used the personalized stamp “Johnny Hallyday - Tour 66” issued in 2009. The envelopes were canceled at the post office of the National Assembly, in front of which the funeral procession had passed. The print run is limited to only 150 numbered copies.
