ECU (European Currency Unit) COLLECTION OF THE PRECURSORS OF THE FUTURE EUROPEAN CURRENCY (1986/1987)
In 1986, almost 10 years after the birth of the European currency, the ECU was still only a currency, and the true "official legal tender" had not yet been minted. It was the West German engraver Werner Sengle, strongly supported by Dr. Karl von Wogau, Member of the European Parliament (EPP-D) and member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, who created the first true series of precursors of the European currency, the "ECU."
This superb series consists of 10 collectible medal coins struck with the effigies of illustrious defenders of the European idea. It reflects the language and culture of the 12 member countries of the European Community, symbolizing their union.
These medals were approved by the Protocol Service of the European Parliament, which, until 1996, used a version as a representative gift, prefiguring the European Mint.
