The EU's Role in Supporting Peace Efforts in Gaza

Following the US peace proposal for Gaza, MEPs debated how the EU should join peace efforts and support the two-state solution. (Debate: Tuesday, 7 October 2025)

US President Donald Trump announced his roadmap for peace in Gaza last Monday. It includes a plan for the release of hostages and the demilitarization of Hamas. European leaders, including Parliament Speaker Roberta Metsola, welcomed the proposal.

Last month, Parliament adopted a resolution on the situation in Gaza, expressing alarm at the humanitarian catastrophe there and stressing that Israel's right to self-defense cannot justify indiscriminate military action. MEPs also stated that member states must consider recognizing the State of Palestine, with a view to achieving the two-state solution. (Source: europarl.europa.eu/news)

Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement reached in Gaza.

Under the ceasefire agreement, announced on the night of October 8-9, 2025, by US President Donald Trump, the last 20 living Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip will be released on October 13, while the remains of the 28 captives are still expected to be returned to Israel.

In addition to the immediate release of all hostages, this agreement should allow massive access for humanitarian aid and a halt to military operations, thereby alleviating the suffering of the civilian population of Gaza and the families of hostages who have been waiting for the return of their loved ones for more than two years.
