COLLECTION OF PRECURSORS OF THE FUTURE EUROPEAN CURRENCY
In 1986, almost 10 years after the birth of the European currency, the ECU was still only a currency, and the true “official legal tender” had not yet been minted. It was the West German engraver Werner Sengle, strongly supported by Dr. Karl von Wogau, Member of the European Parliament (EPP-D) and member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, who created the first true series of precursors to the European currency, the “ECU.”
This superb series consists of 10 collector medal-coins (ECU and ECU Cents) bearing the likenesses of illustrious champions of the European ideal. It reflects the language and culture of the 12 member states of the European Community, symbolizing their union.
These medals had been approved by the Protocol Service of the European Parliament which, until 1996, used a version of them as a representational gift foreshadowing the European Currency.
