On October 20, 1976, the people of Réunion Island discovered the Concorde, the supersonic airliner, for the first time, with Valéry Giscard d'Estaing on board. After General de Gaulle in 1959, he was the second President of the Republic to set foot in Réunion Island.
Valéry Giscard d'Estaing was greeted at the airport by nearly 70,000 people, according to the press at the time. "Triumph for Giscard," headlined the JIR newspaper published the following day. The President, who was awaited by Deputy Mayor Auguste Legros, then went to the Saint-Denis town hall.
