Ocean Liner FRANCE
Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, 1962-1977
The last transatlantic liner built for Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, FRANCE completed the Le Havre-New York route in September 1974, a route that had been operated by the company for 110 years: quite symbolic!
The new flagship of the Transat was launched on May 11, 1960, with the wife of the President of the Republic, Madame Yvonne de Gaulle, as her godmother. Completed in November 1961, she entered service in January 1962. Her maiden voyage to New York took place on February 3, 1962. At the time, she was the longest ocean liner in the world (315.66 meters overall). She operated mainly between Le Havre, Southampton, and New York. During her career under the Transat flag, FRANCE crossed the Atlantic 377 times, carrying nearly 600,000 passengers, and completed a total of 93 cruises.
In August 1979, the ship was sold to the Norwegian shipping company Kloster Rederi A/S, which renamed her NORWAY. She left Le Havre on August 18, 1979. Commander Guy Kérignard headed the ship's headquarters. French Lines Collection
