INSPECTOR / MIR PROGRESS M-36 MISSION: Rescue and inspection operations following the collision of the Progress M-34 spacecraft with MIR
June 25, 1997: During an attempt to re-dock with the Kvant module of the MIR station, the Progress M-34 cargo ship collided with the Spektr module and one of its solar panels. The cosmonauts' ears began to ring, a sign of an air leak and a fairly rapid decompression. While the American Foale prepared the Soyuz for an emergency evacuation, the Russians managed to barely sever all the cables and lines blocking the airlock connecting Mir to the Spektr module. Twenty minutes after the collision, the Russians managed to close the hatch and isolate the Spektr module, which had suffered an air leak: the MIR station was saved!
October 5, 1997: Launch of the Progress-M36 cargo spacecraft carrying the German Inspector satellite, which is to begin its flyby operations around the Mir station to verify its status.
December 17, 1997: Inspector is released for the Mir station, which it flies over for approximately thirty hours. It remains at a safety distance of between 75 and 250 meters. The video system's resolution is one centimeter at a distance of 100 meters.
