- Presidential Visit to the Reunion Island (France) -

On October 20, 1976, two years after his election as head of state, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing arrived in Reunion. Reunionese Raymond Barre is Prime Minister. The President of the Republic traveled aboard the Concorde, at the time the flagship of French civil aviation. This was the first landing of this plane on Reunion Island. The Journal de Reunion Island reported 70,000 spectators who had come to welcome the President of the Republic at Gillot airport.

Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, gives a first speech to Gillot before taking off by helicopter for the prefecture with his wife Anne-Aymone Giscard d'Estaing. During his visit, he will also visit Salazie and Saint-Louis. In this town led by socialist Christian Dambreville, he addresses young people to express his opposition to the demand for autonomy defended by the Reunion Communist Party of Paul Vergès.

A "Concorde" aerophilatelic envelope commemorates this presidential visit.
