In support of France, Germany joins military operations against the Islamic State

Berlin – On December 4, 2015, German lawmakers authorized the deployment of up to 1,200 troops and half a dozen aircraft to participate in international military operations against the Islamic State (ISIS) in support of France following the Paris attacks. This planned military engagement would make it the Bundeswehr's largest mission abroad. Berlin plans to participate in reconnaissance missions in Syria from Turkey with six Tornado aircraft and to deploy a frigate alongside the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.

The German anti-submarine frigate Augsburg has been ordered to join the French carrier strike group (CSG), centered around the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, whose aircraft have been bombing the terrorist group in Iraq and Syria since November 23. The CSG also includes the air defense frigate Chevalier Paul, the anti-submarine frigate La Motte-Picquet (which will be relieved in January by the multi-mission frigate Aquitaine), a nuclear attack submarine, and the command and supply ship Marne.
