Official Readmission of Greece to the Council of Europe

In 1974, following the Greek government's decision to hold free elections by universal suffrage after the fall of the "regime of the colonels," the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe considered inviting Greece to rejoin the organization and instructed the Secretary General to submit a report including a draft invitation.

On November 28, 1974, in light of the favorable opinion of the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Committee of Ministers decided to invite Greece to rejoin the organization.

A philatelic envelope, designed by Historiaphil© (Philately Kiosk of the European Parliament, Strasbourg, France) commemorates the highlights of the Strasbourg session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. It was produced as a continuation of the collection of philatelic envelopes bearing witness since 1949 to the history of Europe and its institutions.
