November 22, 1977-1997

20 years ago, the two Concorde Air France and British Airways landed simultaneously at New York JFK, triumphantly inaugurating the regular supersonic route between Europe and the United States.

On February 4, 1976, the American government authorized test flights to Washington DC and New York, for 12 months at a rate of 3 flights per day for each airline (Air France and British Airways). But on March 25, 1976, the New York airport authorities decided not to accept the "Concorde" under pressure from local residents' and environmentalist associations. A trial then begins, which Concorde will win. On October 17, 1977, the Supreme Court ruled that the airport authority's decision was illegal. On November 22, 1977, two Air France and British Airways "Concorde" landed again at JFK airport in New York and on January 9, 1978, the supersonic finally received the certificate of airworthiness from the FAA.

Several aerophilatelic covers made the same journey aboard Concorde, 20 years apart, in commemoration of these first historic flights of November 22, 1977. Designed by Historiaphil© (Philately Kiosk of the European Parliament, Strasbourg, France) Special aerophilatelic envelopes have been posted since the Strasbourg plenary session of the European Parliament. They were produced as a continuation of the collection of philatelic envelopes testifying since 1949 to the history of Europe and its institutions. Their edition is limited and numbered.
