November 6, 1958 / 2025 “Companion of the Liberation” General de Gaulle awards Winston Churchill the Order of the Liberation

On May 10, 1940, Winston Churchill became Prime Minister, as France was invaded by the German army. He learned that General de Gaulle, Under-Secretary of State for War in the Reynaud cabinet, whom he knew, had decided to join the Free French in England. According to Churchill, General de Gaulle was at that moment "the honor of France." He authorized him to speak on the radio from London and officially recognized him on June 28, 1940, as "leader of the Free French." The two men held each other in high esteem, despite the occasional clashes between them. The defeat of Germany in May 1945 marked the pinnacle of the two men who had always believed in an Allied victory; their influence was immense.

In tribute to the distinguished service rendered to Free France during the war, General de Gaulle awarded Winston Churchill the Cross of the Liberation on November 6, 1958, in Paris (decree of June 18, 1958).

A philatelic envelope, designed by Historiaphil© (Philatelic Kiosk of the European Parliament, Strasbourg, France), commemorates key moments in our history. It was created in keeping with the collection of philatelic envelopes that, since 1949, have documented the history of Europe and its institutions.
